Safeguarding policies

Last updated: 15th May 2025
Applies to: All tutors, students, and staff involved in the delivery of services under ASTER EDUCATION

1. Purpose

This Safeguarding Policy outlines how we protect children, young people, and vulnerable adults in our care. We are committed to creating an environment where all students feel safe, respected, and supported, both emotionally and physically.
Although all teaching is delivered online, safeguarding remains central to our responsibilities and is integrated into our training, tutor conduct, and communication practices.

2. Scope

This policy applies to:
  • All students (particularly those under the age of 18)
  • All tutors and any staff working on behalf of ASTER EDUCATION
  • Parents or guardians engaging with our services on behalf of a child
  • It covers all tuition and courses delivered online, including one-to-one and group formats.

    3. Safeguarding Responsibilities

    • The Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) is KATRINA BUTT. Email: katrina@astereducation.co.uk Any safeguarding concerns should be reported directly to the DSL.
    • All tutors are required to undergo an enhanced DBS check before working with students under the age of 18.
    • Tutors are expected to demonstrate a clear understanding of their safeguarding duties and will receive guidance upon appointment.

    4. Key Principles

    We are committed to:
  • Promoting the welfare and wellbeing of all students
  • Preventing abuse, exploitation, or neglect of any kind
  • Taking all concerns seriously and responding swiftly and appropriately
  • Creating an emotionally safe and respectful learning environment
  • 5. Online Safety and Professional Conduct

To ensure a safe digital environment:
  • All lessons are conducted on secure, pre-approved platforms (e.g. Zoom)
  • Tutors must never record sessions or communicate with students outside the agreed platform or schedule
  • Tutors must conduct lessons from a professional, private setting
  • Students should be appropriately dressed and in a shared or supervised space when possible
  • Tutors must maintain professional boundaries at all times
  • 6. Recognising and Reporting Concerns

Anyone can raise a safeguarding concern — including tutors, parents, or the students themselves.
    What to report:
  • Unexplained changes in a student’s behaviour or demeanour
  • Comments made during lessons that suggest distress, neglect, or inappropriate contact
  • Concerns around the conduct of any tutor or adult in contact with a student
  • How to report: All concerns should be reported to the DSL via email in the first instance. Serious concerns may be escalated to the local authority or relevant safeguarding body.

    7. Training and Review

  • Tutors receive safeguarding guidance as part of their onboarding process
  • The safeguarding policy is reviewed annually or after any serious incident
  • Additional training may be introduced in line with changes in legislation or best practice
  • 8. Contact and Further Support
